Opinions Needed Please!

So yesterday ended up rather interrupted with the end of the previous weeks moving happening, and a couple of other curve balls, so I didn't get what I'd really planned to do done - ugh!  Anywho, I got my first snowflake finished, but I'm not entirely sold on it:

I think the solids don't look quite right in there, what do you reckon?  I'd rather swap out now than leave it til I have others assembled.  My time is getting a little short for this though, so fast opinions please :oD

  1. The solids look like runes and stand out a lot more than the prints so I would say go with one or the other. I do like the block though.

  2. I think it looks great, although the large amount of white in the yellow/orange bit makes it slightly off balance.

  3. I say swap. I do like the block, though.

  4. I think it looks great but agree with Charlotte about the orange 'leg' (can't think of the best word to use so I'm using the only one that came to mind!). Can't wait to see the cornerstones with the big blocks!

  5. Can you do some blocks all solids and some all prints? Agree with the others that the two aren't really mixing well.

  6. I agree that they're really not playing very nicely together - I'd vote for swapping.

  7. I agree that a swap is necessary and that yellow/orange bit is too light.

  8. I agree with most other people that all solids or all prints would look great, and that the yellow print has a bit too much white in it. :} Your block looks perfectly pieced, though! :)

  9. I agree - the solids stand out too much and in the photo the orange one isn't showing well. Lovely block though!

  10. Think the solids are too heavy with the prints - keep them separate. Will be great. Juliex

  11. The yellow bubble fabric disappears into the background and the olids stand out oo much from the others. I'm guessing you're thinking the same thing which is why you're not sure about. Do you have enough of the non-bubble fabric to use just them?

  12. Yep - I say take out the solids and I think then the orange will look okay then or take that too but solids may have to go. Gorgeous block.

  13. i think charlotte's bob on re the white/orange spoke, especially next to the solid grey

  14. I like, the yellow bob is throwing me off since there is so much white in it (it looks that way) -- are there other snowflakes of the same color near these spoke pieces?

  15. I agree about the yellow/orange spoke. WIth so much white in it, it's getting a little lost in the background to me. But it's a beautiful block!

  16. I'm on the side of the yellow fabric being too pale, but otherwise I love this block.

  17. I think we’d all like it better if the orange arm had more orange. Then the colors would hold their own against the solids, and they could all play nice together.

  18. I didn't notice the solids causing trouble, they look fine to me. The orange/white is too pale and disappears, I'd fix that... But saying that it is a fun block!

  19. I like each one of the fabrics except for the white/orange that is lost in the background. The rest looks amazing!

  20. I like the solids. I think they work well. What I'm not so keen on is the orange? Yellow? one that looks almost invisible against the back ground.

  21. I say bin the solids, or you will regret it and find a bit of orange with a bit more orange on, but only if the photo is a true representation - that one might look OK in real life.

    What a palarva xxx

  22. I agree that the lightest arm of the snowflake is more bothersome than the solids.

  23. I'd swap out the solids, and maybe find a more orangey bit of the orange one. Great block though!

  24. Several thoughts, it looks great, and I was drawn to the pale orange first, not the solids. What I do love is how the patterned fabrics add a fractured element to the design.

  25. Like all the others, the solids are too heavy. Plus the yellow is not quite strong enough to stand out.
    Hugs

  26. Ohhhhh I love it!

If you wanted it to be more balanced you could either go all prints, or ditch the 'light' spoke - but to be honest I love it just as it is x

  27. I would use either all solids or all prints, but not both in one snowflake. You could have two kinds of snowflakes to incorporate some of the solids too.

  28. i'm for removing the orange/white part - otherwise, gorgeous

  29. The only one I would take out is the paler one, which doesn't stand out so well against the other brights. Jxo

  30. I don't mind the solids - it's the white with yellow that gets lost

  31. I'm agreeing with the other posters. I wonder if before you rip it out, you could try outlining the orange bubble spoke with orange floss running stitch, and likewise add some white details to the solid block to tone them down. Then you would have to stitch around the other 3 spokes so they all match...

  32. Brighter solids! The grey isn't working but I do love this!

  33. I like the solids but the white and orange(or yellow) doesn't look right to me. Cool block, though

    ReplyDelete
  34. I'm ages behind the times, but agree with others saying swap it out :-)

    ReplyDelete
  35. You're probably done with the fixing already, but I agree about the orange bit.. at a quick glance it almost looks like something isn't even there. Like one leg is missing. Can't wait to see the finished piece!

  36. I'm with the others, all solids would look fab, all colour on colour would look fab, the yellow orange on white doesn't really belong - awesome block though xx

  37. Fantastic! You are so talented!

I agree with you that the solids don't look quite right. Maybe do one with all solids and the other with the patterns? I know I'm not the first to propose this, but just confirming a good idea. : )

Show us what direction you go in!

  38. I'm way late and you've probably already made a decision but I think you should swap out the solids too, they stand out too much. Awesome stitching Katy!

  39. Yeah, solids are too heavy. Sorry, more work for you!

  40. I think the solids are fine, it's just the dominance of white in the orange print. I steer clear of colour on white prints for this very reason, it's such a dominant element because of the starkness- Weeks Ringle does the same according to her Craftsy class
